God has a Plan

From holding babies and changing diapers in an orphanage, to puppet shows and skits to music, Team EPIC-ER from Tennessee did it all.  We were touched by the ways God used all of us during their short stay here in Thailand.  There are so many stories that we could share about what God did over that 7 day period, but one story put us in awe and amazement at God's perfect timing.  

"God has a plan."  That was the message for the evening at Pha Dang Church.  With any good message is a personal story that goes along with the message to help bring the point home.  Our friend shared a story of a family of 7 or 8 people that was traveling together and had gotten in a car accident.  There was only one survivor.    What was God's plan?   We may not know or understand His plan, but we still believe there is one.

At the end of the message a husband and wife were brought forward to receive prayer.  We could see on their faces, expressions that spoke a thousand words.  They were lost, filled with agony and pain.  With tears streaming down their faces the pastor shared their story.

Their son had been doing drugs for some time and in order to support his habit, started stealing from the community.  Friends and neighbors were becoming outraged with this family and the parents were frustrated and angry.  The boy's mom confronted her son about his stealing and scolded him harshly.   The boy (13 years old) then went and took his own life.

Horrified, the mother questioned and blamed herself. 

How do you comfort someone that has experienced this kind of pain and grief.  What could we possibly say?

In a way like no other, God provided the words of comfort that were so desperately needed.  Lovingly encouraged by another team member, a lady from our team stepped forward to share.  She too had experienced this same pain and understood what they were going through.  She had lost a child at a young age and had experienced the same kind of grief.  Our friend shared how God is the only one that can help them through this.  It is through His word and His love that they can overcome such heartache.  

"The pain never fully leaves, but if you allow God to help you though, things will get better". 

After praying for the couple, ministry went on.  There were puppets, skits and dances set to music.  At the end of the evening, the service was closed with a song that involved a lot of dancing with arm movements. 

At the back of the room we noticed the couple.    They were jumping and dancing with everyone else.  There were no longer tears of sorrow, but joy, PURE joy.

We do not know what God's plan is in the loss of a life, but one thing we know for sure is God had a plan for that evening.  His plan was to bring comfort to a couple who had experienced excruciating tragedy.  He wanted that couple to know that He loves them, is there for them and that He will help them through. 

Thank you God, for your perfect timing and words of comfort in times of need.

Help for the Poor

One doctor + 3 nurses + 2 volunteers = 6 hearts of GOLD!   Even though this was our first medical outreach since arriving on the field and had no idea what we were doing, we knew that God would be faithful to use us as long as we were willing.  Would the people get the message we were coming?  Would they come?  What would their needs be?  As the time approached, we knew that we had done all we could to plan and prepare for the team  and now, we would have to leave the rest to God.

When our medical team arrived early the first day, we were overwhelmed by the numbers of people already standing in line.  They were there hours before we were scheduled to open the clinic.  We scrambled to get things set up and ready so there wait would be as short as possible.

There were so many of them with a wide range of needs, but there was one child in particular that stood out that day.  This child had a rash all over his body with sores that were oozing and bleeding.  The frustration and pain was evident on his and his parents faces.   They hadn't been to a doctor.  It is too far and expensive for their family.  The child and his sister who had the same rash was forced to suffer with the constant pain and itching.   You could see the sadness on the faces of the nurses and doctor as they saw cases such as these, that were so easy to fix, yet go untreated because of location and financial inability. 

What a blessing it was that day to see our medical staff professionally calm those who were suffering and bring a smile to the faces of those who were so grateful to finally receive some medical attention.  They saw patients who were sick with the flu, had tumors, blindness, foot conditions, boils, I could go on.  Many of them they were only able to comfort with their words and give them something that would help them get a good nights sleep that they hadn't gotten in years, while others received the medication that they needed in order to receive the relief they had been so desperately needed.  The best thing of all, all of them that were willing, received the gift of prayer and a smile.    

So what happened to the boy you ask?  Two weeks later, we were ministering in the same Ahka village with a Childrens team.  The boy and his parents came forward with a testimony of God's goodness and how He had healed their two children.  There was no sign of rash on their kids and they were all beaming from ear to ear.  Was it a miracle - or medicine?  Does it matter?  God touched that boy and his family that day.  They are changed.  They LOVE God and are giving HIM all the glory...and isn't that what really matters!  THAT's why we do what we do!!!

Time

As we prepared for Team EPIC to arrive, we proceeded as usual, with very few obstacles.   Little did we know, opposition for the project had been quietly growing momentum in the village.  Just days before the team was to arrive,  a meeting of the village elders put the new church project at a halt and we were left scrambling, racing to prepare a new project for the team. It isn't difficult to find projects to do here in Thailand - there is always a need.  The problem we faced was time.  

What project could we pull together with such a short period of time?  Would there be enough funds?  What is the biggest need?  Question, questions and more questions filled our heads.  As we put the need before God, one thing became perfectly clear.  He is in control and it will all come together in a way that only He can do.

There was no time to get proper paperwork filed, or building materials for a larger project in this short of time. There is one project that had been requested, but just seemed small and insignificant.  We really had no other options.  But for the church in Pha Dang, a security wall was not small or insignificant.  In Thailand, all businesses, churches and homes are surrounded by a fence of some sort.  It is something that protects the property, establishes boundaries,  as well as makes it look and feel complete. 

The church in Pha Dang was started about 18 years ago by an 18 year old young man who used to drive his scooter 40 minutes each Sunday  in order to share the gospel to this little Ahka village lying near the hills, south of Chiang Rai.   Since then, the church was turned over to a wonderful lady, Pastor Dao.  It is now a thriving Christian community.  In the time that she has been there, Pastor Dao has raised the funds to completely repair and update the building that has been standing for many, many years, but were unable to come up with the funds to build the wall.

The TN team came with tools, funds for materials, open hearts and a willingness to serve.    As the team arrived at the church, we found the congregation were already at the site preparing the ground.   These villagers do not have much money, but they have an amazing work ethic.  This was their church, and they weren't going to sit and watch others come in and do what they could do them selves.   This community was so touched that a little church in Tennessee would care so much for them and their community, that they would fly around the world to help them.   It was beautiful to watch everyone come together and work side by side, sweating, laughing and smiling, to complete this wall.  

This wall in Pha Dang was only one of the projects that this team worked on while here in Thailand, and it only took a couple of days to build, but the memory of how God moved and touched all of our lives will remain in our hearts forever.  Thank you TEAM EPIC!!!

4th Anniversary of beginning ministry in Thailand

It is hard to believe that it has already been 3 1/2 months since returning to Thailand for our second term.  March was the 4th anniversary of our first arrival here in Thailand.  April was the 6th Anniversary of us being approved as Special Services Missionaries, and was also the 7th Anniversary of us becoming missionaries with the Assemblies of God.

Our first term was filled with exciting new adventures.  We started of the TLC's children's ministry, taught ESL to 6 neighborhood Thai children for a year, taught ESL for 4 months to a college student heading to the US, built and started the TLC Java (Coffee Shop Ministry).  We also worked on 9 different projects including; building 1 church and 3 dorm rooms, as well as 3 church expansions or remodels all while attending full-time language school.  It was an amazing and fulfilling first term and we are so grateful to so many of you who participated in prayer and giving in order for our family to make a difference here in Thailand.  You are the most important part of Team Possible - and for you we are incredibly grateful!

  Upon arriving back to Thailand, our family received some difficult news.   Nathaniel was denied his request to attend Grace International School and graduate with his former classmates.  We didn't have many options, so we contacted the school that Nathaniel attended in Forest Lake during his Junior year to ask if he could be granted a diploma from their institution even though he hadn't attended any of his senior year.   Thankfully, Nathaniel was granted this request.

The North Lakes Academy graduation ceremony took place in early June, but Nathaniel was unable to attend.  Knowing that there was no possible way for Nathaniel to make it to the ceremony, our family along with Cheryl's parents hosted a graduation ceremony and reception for him.









 The evening began with Nathaniel recognizing his senior friends by presenting each of them with a string of beads.  .

We all watched a beautiful video presentation of Nathaniel through the years, created by his sister Naomi. (We'll try to add it to our blog for your viewing.  Naomi did a great job!)

We were blessed by humorous and encouraging  words given by one of  Nathaniel's favorite teachers from Grace - Mr. Tom Miyakawa.

It was a joy for Troy and Cheryl to be able to be the presenters of Nathaniel's diploma and class ring.

 The evening was topped off with a delightful and humorous speech from Nathaniel.


It was a full night of celebration, laughter and tears with some very dear friends.


In August, Nathaniel and Cheryl will be returning to the US to make the transition from life at home, to dorm life.  At that time, we would like to hold a graduation celebration for Nathaniel.  We will give more details as the time draws near.  If you wish to send a card, please mail it to 7606 214th St. N., Forest Lake, MN 55025 -  He will get them when we arrive in August.

  


 Nathaniel has been accepted to North Central University this fall and is planning on becoming a High School music teacher.  He was awared 2 scholarships, $5500 - Academic Honors and $2500.00 - missionary child.  Would you -please pray with us as Nathaniel waits for notice on grant amounts.  Nathaniel's desire is to have no debt when he leaves college.

 This last month has been one of great joy welcoming new friends as they arrive in Thailand for the first time, as well as tears of sadness, saying goodbye to friends who have become very dear to us.

Even though it is hard to say goodbye, we are so blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of so many peoples lives - even if it is, in many cases, for only a short time.

We absolutely LOVE what we do and are blessed to cross paths with so many people who love Jesus and are willing to do ANYTHING for Him, including traveling around the world to help people they don't even know.  We are so honored to do what we do and look forward to many more years of helping teams have a powerful experience here in Thailand!

"From the Planes to the Fire"

The first day on the ground we try to help team members become familiar with their surroundings, as well as keep them awake in order to get adjusted to the time change as quickly as possible.

We give our guests opportunities to learn how the local transportation works, enjoy local snacks and foods, and take a peek into the religious acts of a Thai Buddhist.

This day gives newcomers an opportunity to feel comfortable with their surroundings and their new hosts.

When the day is over, people are tired but smiling, grateful for their experience.

In a race, there can "technically" only be one winner, but here in Thailand - learning how to get around, enjoy tasty food and learn about another culture...everyone wins!

Prayer Requests

Thank you so much for your prayers. We are blessed by your continued commitment to us!

1. Pastor Wiripong and the new Chiangrai Akha Church plant that started in April.
2. Future teams and workers to come help with our ministry. The field is plentiful but the workers are few.
3. Troy - as he prepares for the 6th grade equivalency language test in the fall! This is an extremely difficult test and will take many, many hours of preparation.
4. Determining the route of education for Naomi and Natalie this coming school year.
5. Our family as we prepare to leave for Cambodia for Asia Pacific Meetings
6. Cheryl and Nathaniel as they plan to leave for the US in August to prepare Nathaniel for college.
7. Nathaniel as he is awaits scholarship and grant awards to see how much of his college will be paid for.

1st Akha Speaking Church in Chiangrai

Troy had the wonderful opportunity to be at the Grand Opening of the first Akha speaking Church in Chiangrai, Thailand, this past Friday. It was incredibly special for him to be able to watch this dream come to fruition. Pastor Wiripong was one of the first tribal pastors that met with Troy and began sharing his dreams about reaching the Akha people, something they both had a heart for. Pastor Wiripong started a church in an Akha village several years ago, and Troy was blessed to bring a team in to build it's first permanent Church structure in that village. Two years ago, God began to use others to encourage Pastor Wiripong to start a church - in Chiangrai. Chiangrai has the largest concentration of Ahka speaking people in all of Thailand.

Pastor Wiripong, also Akha, began his ministry about 14 years ago. He felt the call on his life and left his small village in order to attend Bible School in Bangkok. Once completed, he returned to North Thailand to start churches in Akha villages. He has started at least 5 Ahka churches and works with many others.

The Chiangrai Assembly of God Grand Opening had around 60 people and was standing room only. We can't wait to see what is in store for Pastor Wiripong, Chiangrai and the Akha people!

Nathaniel Graduates this month

For many years, people have been asking us, "Where is Nathaniel going to graduate?" Our family had always intended on having Nathaniel attend Grace International School (GIS) here in Chiangmai, for Nathaniel's senior year, allowing him to graduate with his classmates at Grace. This is the same school that Nathaniel attended during his 9th and 10th grade years, so he has established many terrific friendships. Our family was unable to make it back to Thailand until the end of February of this year - halfway through his senior year. GIS has a policy in place, that we were unaware of, that states every graduating senior must attend their entire senior year or they will not be permitted to graduate. Because Nathaniel was unable to attend this entire school year, he is unable to graduate at GIS. When we heard the news, we contacted North Lakes Academy (NLA) - the school that Nathaniel attended his Junior year in the states. In explaining our circumstances, the principal was very sympathetic and said she would take it before the board. We are thrilled to report that Nathaniel is being granted a diploma from North Lakes Academy, Forest Lake, MN. He has enough credits that he no longer has to take classes, and has the ability to spend quality time with his friends before they all depart back to the states for college. Unfortunately, our family will not be able to return to the states for the graduation ceremony, so we have decided to host a private Graduation ceremony for Nathaniel on April 27th at TLC center, here in Chiangmai. Thank you so much for all of the encouraging words and prayers that we have received since all of this began back in February. We are truly blessed!

Hitting the ground running...

After only a week of being here in Thailand, we hosted team from Wadena, MN. We had been planning and preparing for the team for a little over a year - but from the U.S. As time grew closer for us to leave for Thailand, so did plans for the team from

Wadena.

The project: 2 classrooms, an office, a storage room and a kitchen at Pastor Prasomsuk's Maneenorporat Church. There weren't any rooms to have Sunday School while church was going on. The children were meeting outside, under a tarp next to the church.

We had one week in country to prepare for the teams arrival. Drawing up plans, ordering materials, gathering all the tools. It doesn't sound like much, but when you are dealing with jet lag, in a country where you can't buy all the items under one roof, you still don't know all the names for things, products are different, or they don't tell that it is a special order item until you arrive to pick it up and they don't have any...it can make things just a little more complicated. Even through all the ups and downs, when the team arrived - we were ready and excited to get started.

The team arrived late on Tuesday March 6th, and by Wednesday night they had traveled around the city getting to know the transportation system, bartered with the locals learning how to handle Thai money, as well as learning a little about Buddhism and Thai culture.

On Thursday, the construction began. They built a two-room addition to the church as well as finished a kitchen area, office area, and storage area. With some extra funds and a little extra time, they decided to throw in a new platform.

During there time here, they also had an opportunity to do ministry at a new school that had been started by Pastor Prasomsuk. They played red light, green light, taught American football, blew bubbles with the kids, and as a part of the lesson had water balloons thrown at "Goliath" (Caleb Monson) with the kids pretending they were "David". The team also had a chance to go to the new Hope House dorms and paint the Living area and bedrooms for the girls.

We are so grateful for such a wonderful group of of people who sacrificed so much to come and minister here with us!! We can't wait until we have another opportunity to work with people like these! Please pray for Team Possible as we continue to host teams and work towards sharing Christ's love to the Thai people!

Plans for Departure

It's getting close!!! Only 8 more days until we load up on the plane to leave for Thailand. We will leave at 4:00am for the airport and depart for Thailand at 6:50am on Monday, Feb. 27.

Our last few months have been filled with meetings with pastors, dinners with family and friends, pre-packing, preparing for our sale, speaking in churches, homeschooling, and a lot more that I just can't think of at this moment.

This last weekend we had our huge moving sale (Thank you Sue, Melanie, Angie, Lori, Jean, Stephanie, Kent and Don that so willingly gave up their personal time to help us either before or during our sale, and to all the ladies in Troy's family who helped clean up after the sale! We couldn't have done it without you!) The sale helped us move about 75% of our household items, plus our van. Thankfully, we have some good friends that are allowing us the use of one of their vehicles for this last week we are here. It has been an incredible push for our family to try to accomplish so much in such a short 2 1/2 weeks and are amazed by all that we have accomplished. Clearly, only by God's grace and goodness and some awesome family and friends! :)

Last night our we had an opportunity to get together with Troy's family one last time before we leave the country. It is so nice to have family (on both sides) that are supportive and understanding of all that we go through as missionaries.

This next week will entail boxing up the remaining items that did not sell and donating them, packing - and listing all of the items that are coming with us to Thailand, as well as repacking and making lists of all of the items that are being stored at a friends while we are away.

It is going to be very busy this coming week. We continually are being attacked and we would really appreciate your prayers during this transition. (ie; Computer Hard drive crashed DEAD!! - - lost some really important e-mails - we had backed up everything except e-mails a little under a month ago, Troy's truck broke down - also a complete loss, denial of Nathaniel to be accepted at his school in Thailand in order to graduate with his friends (long story and under appeal)). I could go on, but I'm sure you get the point.

Please pray for:

1. Packing process - smooth - and quick (and for helpers)
2. House clean and ready for renters/sale.
   
3. Opportunities for quality time with friends these last few days.
4. Last of the monthly and cash funds promised to come in.
5. Smooth flight and transition...no sickness on the plane this time! ;)
   
6. Quickness in getting over jet lag.
7. The ability to prepare properly for a team coming in beginning of march.
8. Our living room furniture to sell
9. Our home to rent or sell to the RIGHT person.
10. Nathaniel's acceptance into Grace International School (if it is God's will)

GREAT NEWS!!!

Our itineration cycle of raising support is almost over! We just got news from AGWM that we are officially at 98% of our monthly support needed. We only need approximately $150.00/month in new support. We do have several people that have committed to give but have not yet sent their money in, so please keep them in your prayers that they would be able to follow through with their pledges. Though we have enjoyed our time here among friends and family, it is time to move towards the next chapter God has in store for us. Thank you to all of you who have stood by us through first term and our time here in the US!

Our support base and prayer networks are growing and we expect great things to come! We have applied for our visas and we are drawing closer to the day we can buy our tickets. In order to purchase tickets, we are still in need of $15,000 which covers airfare, visas, travel in country, moving expense and initial living expenses for our family of 5. Please continue to pray as we are needing this money to be sent in to AGWM by the end of this month. The price of tickets are steadily increasing, so the sooner we can buy the tickets, the better.

We are so excited for our new ministry in Thailand. We will be working in the northern tribal regions sharing the love of Christ through economic and community development to improve quality of life. As their physical needs are being met, we plan to build relationships and establish home bible study groups and churches. We strongly believe this will make a huge difference in the prevention of the Human trafficking that is using these poor, uneducated villages as a harvest ground.

Slave Trade in Thailand...We can make a difference.

We believe we can make a difference.

The problems that face the rural tribal people in Northern, Thailand run deep. Animism, drug and alcohol abuse, lack of education & self worth, along with poverty, leave many with a feeling of hopelessness. Many families who struggle with these issues, in desperation, turn to selling their own children as a source of income in hopes of easing their financial burden.

Our plan is to go into these villages and focus on meeting “felt” needs in order to build relationships. While our teams are in the villages, we also plan to work with the village to find a viable source of income. We will then work to bring education into the villages and encourage them to share with other villages what God has done for them. After doing some basic community projects we will begin holding “quest” meetings to let the villages know why we came and answer any questions they have about us and Christianity. Once we see peoples hearts turning to Christ, we will turn these meetings to bible studies and eventually church plants.

Together we can make this vision a reality. Will you help send us?

We are so blessed to have such a great group of people that support and encourage our family in our Ministry! What a wonderful team we all make together! Thank you for all you do to make our ministry possible!  These last couple of weeks God has blessed us incredibly with so many people willing to help and serve at our fundraiser.  Many generous individuals have stepped up and gifted us with some amazing items for our Closed Bid Auction as well and we are so thankful.  God is amazing.

 

Prayer Requests:  With our benefit coming up on June 25, we wanted to ask that you take a moment to lift a few things up in prayer. 

1. Volunteers.   We need a few more volunteers  - the more we have, the smoother everything will go.

2. Advertising... We need to keep getting the word out there.  We think this is going to be the talk of the town - and nobody will want to miss it!
3. Auction – That people would have the ability to be generous on their bids– the more money we raise – the quicker we can get back to Thailand!

Team Possible Prayer & Praise Update

Greetings from the Scott Family! 

 

First, we want to thank you so much for your continued support for our families journey back to Thailand.  We couldn't possibly be where we are without you all.  Your prayers and encouragement mean the world to us and we are honored to have you as a part of our team! 

 

Praise Reports:

• We have so enjoyed being back in the States this last year.  We have travelled to 4 states, spoke in over 70 churches,  met and visited with over 90 pastors.  This last month alone, we had 13 new churches commit to giving to us – Praise God.  We have been so blessed to have opportunities to share how God used us in Thailand along with the vision for the future, to meet wonderful new people, and reconnect with friends and family that we hadn't seen or hugged in over 3 years! 
• All of our travels have been wonderful and safe.  Thank you so much for those of you who have been praying for those areas – God has been so faithful!
• The kids just completed their 11th grade (Nathaniel) and 7th Grade (Naomi) years in school with both of them doing extremely well academically and made some wonderful new friends – thank your for your prayers for that area as well!
• 5 churches are excited about sending teams to work with our ministry – and funding any project they work on.  God is so faithful – we can't wait to get back and get started!

 

Prayer Requests:

• Our pledge drive begins next week.  We only need $2000/month and $31,000 cash to come in by the End of July so we have time to purchase our Airline tickets to return by the end of August.  Please pray that God will touch individuals hearts and compel them to give.  With Him – anything is possible – even in this economy! 
• Please pray for CHEAP airline tickets!!!
• ATaste of Thailand Benefit next Saturday. There are several areas of prayer:
  • Volunteers – LOTS – Musicians, bakers, kitchen help, set up, clean up, workers for the event.  The more volunteers we have the easier it is on everyone!
  • Donations of large items for the closed bid auction.
  • Advertisers – lots of people to spread the word about the event  - many churches and individuals from the community are being invited. 
  • LOTS of attendees – we are praying for over 500 people to come.  We currently have people who are driving over 2 hours to attend this event – lets pray them in together!

  This is going to be an AMAZING event – and if we have enough volunteers AND attendees – this could very well be what gets us back to Thailand by this August.  Will you join us in prayer for these things?

Prayer for Team Possible and A Taste of Thailand Benefit

Friends of Team Possible - we are so blessed to have such a great group of people that support and encourage our family in this Ministry - we are incredibly grateful! What a wonderful team we all make together! Thank you for all you do to make our ministry possible!

A quick praise report.  Troy had a fantastic couple of Trips down to Alabama and Florida last month. In the process, 10 churches picked us up for support as well as the possibility for 5 more.  Plus, 3 churches from Minnesota.  We haven't heard the amounts yet, so are excitedly anticipating what that means for our return date in August.  God is so good and we give Him all the credit – He is amazing!

I am sending this e-mail to all of our supporters as we have a HUGE benefit coming up on June 25 at Maranatha in Wyoming, MN.  There are many of you who don't live near us, but I wanted to give you an opportunity to be a part of it, even if it is only through your prayers for our needs. 

The benefit is coming up quickly and there are a few things that you could do that would REALLY help this benefit be a Huge SUCCESS. Please let us know if you are able to help with any of the following areas.
1. Volunteer at the event - set up, decorate, cook, help with kids, clean up.... The more volunteers we get, the quicker and easier everything will go – we will even accept help from the youth!
2. Advertising... We need to get the word out there. Would you be willing to spread the word by posting our event on your face book page, and sending out an e-mail to all your local friends and family... AND talking it up amongst your friends - even if you aren't able to be there yourself. Also, would you be willing to invite people to the Event from the FaceBook Event page (A Taste of Thailand Benefit - there are 2 event pages, but you only need to invite your friends on one of them!) We think this is going to be the talk of the town - and nobody will want to miss it!
3. Donations, If you have something FANTASTIC to donate, or you know someone who does, or have the money to buy a wonderful prize (ie: a dinner for 2 at a nice restaurant, or a weekend getaway package at a nice resort, a car ;} ) that would be WONDERFUL! We are having a Closed Bid Auction as well as a Grand Prize Give Away and are looking for some great prizes to include.

If you can help in any or ALL of those areas we would greatly appreciate it. The countdown has begun for our return and think this event could be just what we need to get us back there by August! Yahoo! We are excited to hear from you and how you may be able to help!

A couple of other quick areas of prayers are:

1. Safety in our travels as we continue to speak in churches around the country through the end of summer.
   
2. Finances: we still need about 20% of our monthly commitments to be signed and come in for us to leave by August. 
   
3. Cash fund,  we still need about $35,000 for our cash funds –( airfare, visas (temporary & work), 3 months living expenses in Thailand,  etc.)  to come in  as well.
